WE WERE BORN SCARED.
THE FIRST reaction a human has at the moment of birth is to let out one huge, frantic wail. There is no doubt in theminds of the people present at this blessed event that this tiny being's entrance into the world is made with the utmost reluctance. And why should it be otherwise?
The average human fetus spends approximately nine months in the warmth and safety of its mother's womb, where its every need is met in blissful peace and silence. Suddenly, after being steadily con-
ditioned to a life of total comfort, the fetus is brutally expelled from its cozy haven and banished into an unknown and threatening world. Gone are the warmth, the safety, the dreamlike state of quiet
contentment. They are replaced by loud noises, cold air, hard surfaces, and constant physical discomfort. Small wonder the newborn child cries at birth. The child has come face to face for the first time with what will forever remain his or her worst enemy: fear.
Fear is our initial reaction to the threats of our environment. In a sense fear can be considered an overreaction of the preservation instinct. Because it invites caution, it can be at times of help to the
individual. But if it is allowed to overpower the mind, it can be a terribly crippling affliction.
Primitive people learned the meaning of fear very early. Besieged by hunger, inclement weather, wild animals, disease, and natural disasters, their life was a constant struggle for survival. And they learned very quickly that to surrender to fear meant death.
In order to protect themselves against the dangers of their environment and to bolster their courage, they decided to enlist the aid of a formidable ally: the powers of nature. The sun, the moon, the wind, the sea, and the earth itself with all its bountiful promises, became deities with supernatural powers that could be tapped through proper worship and sacrifice. Symbols representing these forces and their powers were among the first artistic efforts of primitive people. These symbols became known as amulets, talismans, charms and fetishes.

In his Memorabilia, the fourth-century b.c.e. Athenian historian and essay-
ist Xenophon reports how Socrates in the company of his students visits the home of a famous courtesan named Theodote and engages her in a spirited conversation about the contrivances she uses to attract her male friends. At the end of this conversation Socrates mentions in a very playful manner the use of love magic (3.11.16–17):1
And Socrates, making light of his own laziness, said: “But it is not atall easy, Theodote, for me to get free, for much business, both private and public, keeps me busy. And I have also got my girlfriends (philai), who neither day nor night allow me to escape from them,
since they are learning both love potions (philtra) and incantations (epÃidai) from me.”
“Indeed, do you also know how to do these things, Socrates?” she said.
“Why else,” he said, “do you think that Apollodorus here and Antisthenes never leave me? And why do you think that Cebes and Simmias come from Thebes? Know well that these things do not

ISIS LOVE SPELL

The Isis sex spell embedded within the Great Magical Papyrus of
Paris is composed of Old Coptic and Greek sections to be used to obtain a lover. The text opens (94-114) with the story of the adultery of Osiris with Nephthys and Isis's use of magic to make Osiris come back to her.
The same story is recounted in Plutarch On Isis and Osiris 14, but there the infidelity of Osiris and the grief of Isis are minimized. The spell that follows (115-31) applies the power of the mythic story, as
an historiola, to the desire of a person (a male) to attract a woman.
Two sets of instructions for the use of the spells (132-37; 144-46) are
preserved in Greek. The final two Old Coptic sections offer spells for
a woman to get a man (138-43) and for a man to get a woman
(147-53).
TEXT
'It is Isis who is coming from the mountain at midday in summer, the dusty young woman. Her eyes are full of tears and her heart is full of sighs. Her father, Thoth the great, came to her and asked her, 'My daughter Isis, you dusty young woman, why are your eyes full of tears, your heart full of sighs, ••• of your gar-

PEACEFUL HOME SPELL

Items Needed:
One Blue Candle
Tranquillity Oil (equal amounts of ylang ylang, rose and lavender oils)
Sandalwood incense
This spell is especially useful for those who entertain on a business level. There are times when people of varying viewpoints may need to come together in a social atmosphere. To keep things running smoothly, harmoniously, and peacefully use this spell before the party.
One hour before the party take a ritual bath. As you are doing this, begin to visualize the guests as they arrive, seeing in your mind’s eye the evening progressing and everyone having a wonderful time.
When you finish bathing, anoint your solar plexus with the tranquillity oil. This will help you project a positive and harmonious energy level throughout the evening.
Take the blue candle and place it in the room where most of the evening’s activities will be held. Now light the incense and carry it throughout the house, saying, as you move from room to room:
'Queen of heaven, star of sea
Fill this house with love and harmony
Silver goddess enthroned above
Let all gather here in peace and love'.
Just before the guests arrive, enter the room where you have placed the blue
candle and light it. Walk in clockwise around the room four times, chanting just
as you did in the other rooms. Place the incense next to the candle and wait for
your guests.

AMULET POWERS
Although it is worn on the body as a piece of jewelry, the amulet is different from “normal” jewelry in that it holds a magical significance that is peculiar to its owner or wearer. Generally, the powers of the amulet fall into two specific categories, either to bring luck or to avert evil; either of these
qualities arguably reflect a positive or negative attitude on the part of the owner.
The talisman is effectively the same thing as an amulet although its name derives from an Arabic word meaning “magic picture.” Therefore a charm made specifically and inscribed with the names of the spirits, the Seal of Solomon, and other mystical symbols is more likely to be referred to as a talisman.
Significant symbols for use as amulets include birthstones (or other gems according to their magical powers), astrological signs, specific symbols such as the Hand of Fatima or the cornus, and
symbols specific to the religious and spiritual beliefs of the wearer, such as the cross, the star, words, names, and numbers.
Incidentally, both amulets and talismans are referred to as “charms;” the origin of this word has the same root as the Latin word for “song,” indicating the link between a magical sound and a magical intention.
