Welcome to this World of Warcraft Battle for Azeroth Guide for Vengeance Demon Hunters looking to optimize their tanking in PvE end-game. The recommendations in this guide are a mixture of automated simulation data and hand-picked choices that account for the wide variety of character setups at level 120. Then only archer left it's hard to die even without mana. P1 takes me about 20-30 tries (10 or more was very stupid) Phase 2 (running) is a joke, you don't even need to wait for hero for it.

A lot of guides for Mage Tower go over what people used on THEIR kill pull, and they don't talk about alternatives and budget legendary options. I just finished my fight with Xylem today, and after over 120 pulls on the guy, I think I can say that I know everything about the fight.

My armory page: Aliarra

Before goign any further, ABSOLUTELY set up two sets of armor/legendaries in advance. The Xylem fight requires you to focus on not dying, while the Demon requires huge DPS and some burst AoE. This means you'll also want Tomes of the Tranquil Mind. Blizzard was generous enough to take you out of combat between the two parts of the scenario, take advantage of it. I recommend using the Talent Set Editor addon to swap between talents from one phase to another, and having your equipment sets put on an action bar in advance so you odn't spend too much time in a panicked hurry and fuck up gear/talent swaps.

Part 1: Legendaries

Raddon's Cascading Eyes
Now, I know that this legendary sounds good for breaking out of the Razor Ice, but funnily enough, it's borderline useless! You're never going to benefit from the buff during the Xylem phase, since the soul fragments will set the cooldown to 0 or nearly 0 when you break out of it with eye beam+blade dance. During the demon fight, it might be useful to get a second beam out to kill the adds, but there are better options for it.

Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus
The best legendary for the Xylem fight, bar none. It reduces the damage you take from the periodic frostbolt casts, saves your life sometimes from shadow barrage hits, and makes his arcane phase trivial to survive. Get a Weakaura to track the timer for the buff, this will help you know when to pop defensives, eye beam/metamorphosis for healing, and generally plan the fight out. Against the demon, it helps you survive its attacks, but since the fight is a complete DPS check there, it doesn't help very much.

Delusions of Grandeur
Not particularly useful against Xylem, but it does let you kill him slightly faster with the increased metamorphosis timing. Pair it with a Convergence of Fates for maximum uptime if that's your game plan- which is ideal for when you fight the demon (the second metamorphosis is incredibly important since it will be coming right as your health is critical and you're almost out of space to fight).

Achor, the Eternal Hunger
Almost as good as Prydaz for survivability. It helps you live through Arcane phases on Xylem, and will keep your life high during the demon fight- unfortunately since it provides no damage it's low priority for the demon fight.

Mo'arg Bionic Stabilizers
It does nothing against Xylem, but it's absolutely essential to killing the demon's adds as fast as possible. You MUST equip this or the burning wish trinket if you want to kill the adds without popping nemesis/chaos blades on time. If you have to choose between the two, take this over the trinket.

Cinidaria, the Symbiote
It doesn't help you at all during the Xylem fight- you don't need healing when trapped in Razor Ice, since Soul Rending+Demonic heals you to full by using Eye Beams. Against the demon, it gives you a boost to damage against the adds and gives you that little bit of edge you might need to pull through the fight. It's strong, but not the best choice.

Loramus Thalipedes' Sacrifice
It basically is a stat stick. Fel rush doesn't deal enough damage to justify using this, even when you need to knock out the adds.

Crafted Legendary Boots
Also a statstick. It might help you get past the darkness sections against Xylem, but proper timing, positioning, and practice will be more important there.

Sephuz's Secret
You will be triggering this ring almost on cooldown against Xylem, which is a huge deal. Interrupting the clones he summons provides a huge speed boost which might be essential to surviving a darkness phase. Against the demon, it's fairly good- both the boss AND the adds are vulnerable to CC, so you can get the damage out faster to kill the adds, and burn the boss better when you proc it. You can do this with Arcane Torrent if you're playing horde.

Anger of the Half-Giants
The best legendary. It's less useful on Xylem than it is against the demon, so I'd recommend better legendaries for him. Against the demon, you need this.

Kil'Jaeden's Burning Wish
This doesn't do anything special against Xylem, since against Razor Ice you'll be using Eye beams+Blade dance to break out, but it's very strong against the adds on the demon fight. One quick note: the adds get summoned ~60 seconds after the last set die, so you need to pop it the second that they spawn or else you might miss it on the later summons. On my killing pull, it came off cooldown just barely in time to snipe the last set of adds while they were closing in on the demon.

So a rundown of Legendary priorities against each boss:

Xylem: Prydaz > Achor > Sephuz > Anger > DoG > Burning Wish > everything else.

Demon: Anger > Mo'arg > Burning Wish > Cinidaria > Sephuz > DoG > Prydaz=Achor > Boots and Raddons

Part 2: Talent Builds

Now, your talents will be based partially on preference, partially on what you have as legendaries.

Against Xylem: We'll be using the basic Demonic package, so take Blind Fury and Demonic. Since we want Eye beams cooldown to go down faster and for the sustainability it provides, we'll be using Demonic Appetite as well. I recommend First Blood over Bloodlet on the level 102 tier, since you don't want to take Master of the Glaive in the 108 tier (the reason being that when you reposition Xylem after an interrupt, he moves much less while snared by your glaives). You absolutely need Soul Rending to survive, since 30% leech will not keep you topped off as often, and you won't need to upgrade blur most of the time for this fight. The slow from Darkness makes Netherwalk borderline useless as a survivability talent, but if you have no defensive legendaries to keep you topped off during the arcane phase, you can use it to soak some arcane barrages. Take Fel eruption for the stun, the Xylem fight has no DPS check to justify taking nemesis- and momentum is very bad since you'll need your mobility skills off cooldown in order to not die to darkness. Finally, take Unleashed Power over Master of the Glaive since you'll occasionally find yourself with not enough energy to eye beam out of Razor Ice, and your artifact talent allows you to getsome soul shards by using Chaos Nova on the ice.

Against the Demon: Your talents will be based on your DPS preference here. I recommend the classic Demon Blades build of 2232311. We're taking Bloodlet over First blood because you NEED to kill the adds as fast as possible- if you're using both Mo'args AND Kil'jaedens Burning Wish (or you have 915+ ilevel), you probably don't need bloodlet and can take First Blood for the single target benefits. Desperate Instincts will save your life more than Soul Rending, and you can't waste time using Netherwalk during this fight.

Part 3: The Overall Game Plan

Frost Phase

While Xylem is chatting to you, make sure your food buff is up. After the Eye explodes into purple fog, prepot with Potion of Prolonged Power- this is also a good time to enter metamorphosis since it'll be up by the time you might need it again. When he starts casting Frostbolts, interrupt one as soon as possible. While he's unable to cast, you can force him to walk closer to the center of the battlefield so it's easier to reposition after getting trapped in Razor Ice. This will be harder on subsequent frost phases since he'll be able to use shadow barrage, which can't be interrupted.

Razor Ice can be broken just by popping Eye Beams, then following up with blade dance. This provides you with a LOT of Soul Fragments to heal up with, on top of being in metamorphosis (thanks to demonic) so you can keep yourself topped off for a good chunk of time while he casts frostbolts to no effect. After teleporting 3 times and knocking you into razor ice, he'll enter the first darkness phase. Once you get the feel of it, you can use Imprison on him as he starts darkness, so it's easier to spot where he is hiding- but this isn't necessary.

Darkness Phase is his intermediate section between his alternations of frost and arcane phase. He will pick a random place on the outer edge of the battlefield, almost always on the opposite side that you're on (I once had him decide to sit behind me when he did it, I got very confused and died to the ticking dot before realizing what had happened). He also summons a lot of illusions of himself that all channel the same spell- when they finish casting it, they knock back and deal minor damage to you if you're too close to them. It can be interrupted if you need to, but their life is so low you can just kill them fairly quickly.

To break out of darkness, you have to find Xylem from among the army of clones. Fortunately, if your camera is positioned properly, you can see where he lands, and any visual effects on him from your debuffs- such as imprison or fel eruption. In addition, he has a glittering aura around him so you can spot him- this may take an attempt or two to get used to, but try to get the feel of when darkness begins, so you can position yourself along the outer side of the battlefield relative to Xylem. You can watch where he's teleporting to with the lights that appear whenever he does it.

If you position Xylem closer to the inside of the field you can reach him before the Darkness DoT effect begins just by using Fel Rush x2, possibly adding a Vengeful Retreat if you're quick enough with positioning and movement. It's okay to use Metamorphosis to get through this section faster, but if his health is below 30%, then be prepared to spend some time not dealing damage, since you need it to have 40 seconds cooldown or less for when the second fight begins (and Xylem doesn't have any DPS checks while the Demon fight requires you to activate metamorphosis at least once)

Then you're in Arcane Phase, probably the hardest part without defensive legendaries. You MUST save an interrupt (consume magic and arcane torrent) for when he casts draw power, or else you're likely going to die. Interrupt his arcane barrages with Imprison, Chaos Nova, and Fel Eruption if you don't have Prydaz or metamorphosis up.

He follows a strict pattern in arcane phase if you don't interrupt/cc him except for the Draw Power cast. Arcane Barrage, Shadow Barrage, Arcane Barrage, Draw Power, Arcane Barrage, Teleport, Arcane Barrage. After teleporting once, his pattern changes slightly but he will use draw power again about 20-25 seconds after the first cast. After using Draw Power, you can imprison him during the next Arcane Barrage (second barrage after he teleports) to stop him from starting an arcane barrage after the teleport.

When you get Xylem down to 10%, he stops fighting and you leave combat for about 15 seconds. Then you have to start Phase 2. Use this time to swap to high DPS gear and Talents, and as soon as the Demon spawns (but before combat begins), prepot with another potion of the old war. Do this as soon as he spawns, because by the time you kill the first set of adds, there should be 0-5 seconds left on potion cooldown. When you finish off the first set of adds, use metamorphosis+nemesis+chaos blades, pop a potion of the old war, and use your drums. Use this time to chunk off about 40-50% of the demon's life while slowly kiting him away from the corrupted ground.

Do not use stuns on the demon when possible, because if you interrupt his seed of chaos cast, the adds spawn instantly and you'll accidentally heal him for 60% of his life. The adds each heal the boss upon touching him, so be sure to save Fury of the Illidari, 2x Throw Glaive, Eye Beams, and Chaos Nova for them.

This fight is hard as fuck right now, so don't feel bad about wiping over and over again. Lord knows it took me a lot of work to get it all down. Good luck on your attempts!
